Among those are Chachapoyas and the Utcubamba Valley, places that I would be happy to return to a thousand times, not only to enjoy their natural and cultural beauty, but also because they have retained intact their essence and possess enormous potential for the opening of new routes.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of exploring the area with specialists in different fields, including archaeologists. This experience has helped me to understand that more investigation is needed, and also that responsible tourism is key to the proper interpretation and appreciation that the area deserves. Today, I want to share with you some of the excursions that I consider essential for an understanding of how monumental archaeology, living culture, luxuriant nature and adventure are combined here.

Let’s journey together to this wonderful destination, where every trip feels like an expedition worthy of a movie.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_margin=”||0px||false|false” custom_padding=”30px||0px||false|false” text_font_size_phone=”3.2em” border_radii=”off||||” border_width_top=”1px” global_colors_info=”{}”]After a short flight of less than an hour, I arrive in Chachapoyas, where the gentle rhythm of daily life immediately sets a different pace. Most flights land in the early morning, offering the perfect opportunity to settle in and begin exploring. With just over 60,000 residents, this small capital of the Amazonas region has preserved its quiet charm—an oasis of calm compared to the bustle of cities like Lima, Arequipa, or Cusco.

My journey begins at the Huancas Urco viewpoint, where the Andes melt into the Amazon in a breathtaking display of natural grandeur. I am at around 2600 meters and, from here, I can appreciate the dramatic landscape formed by the canyons of the Sonche and Utcubamba rivers. It is a clear day, and in the distance I can see the majestic Gocta waterfall.

Just beyond the viewpoint lies the town of Huancas, known for its rich ceramic heritage. In 2012, this artisanal legacy was declared part of Peru’s National Cultural Heritage. I meet Doña Buenaventura Vilca, a master potter who learned her craft from her mother and grandmother. Today, she teaches her daughter, continuing a line of women artisans who shape clay with ancestral wisdom. Their pieces—pitchers, jars, and ritual vessels—are fired in wood-burning kilns, and their craft respects lunar cycles and ancient customs. Although Quechua has not been spoken as part of daily life in the region for several generations, many of the words and expressions associated with pottery making retain their roots in the language of the Incas.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_color=”#ffffff” transform_scale_tablet=”” transform_scale_phone=”” transform_scale_last_edited=”on|tablet” transform_scale_linked=”off” transform_translate=”50px|-50px” transform_translate_tablet=”0px|0px” transform_translate_phone=”0px|0px” transform_translate_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_translate_linked=”off” transform_rotate_tablet=”” transform_rotate_phone=”” transform_rotate_last_edited=”on|tablet” transform_skew_tablet=”” transform_skew_phone=”” transform_skew_last_edited=”on|tablet” transform_origin=”81%|86%” transform_origin_tablet=”81%|86%” transform_origin_phone=”81%|86%” transform_origin_last_edited=”on|tablet” transform_styles_last_edited=”on|desktop” custom_padding=”25px||25px|25px|false|false” custom_padding_tablet=”15px|20px|15px|15px|false|false” custom_padding_phone=”20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false” custom_padding_last_edited=”on|desktop” transform_styles_tablet=”” transform_styles_phone=”” border_radii=”off|30px|||30px” border_radii_tablet=”off|0px|||0px” border_radii_phone=”off|0px|||0px” border_radii_last_edited=”on|tablet” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_image src=”https://colturperu.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Peru-Chachapoyas-Kuelap-Map-Archaeological-Site-esp.jpg” title_text=”Peru-Chachapoyas-Kuelap-Map-Archaeological-Site-esp” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” border_radii=”off|1em|0em|0em|1em” border_width_all=”1px” border_width_right=”1px” border_radii_tablet=”on|20px|20px|20px|20px” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”0.9em” header_6_font=”–et_global_heading_font|600|||||||” header_6_font_size=”1.1em” link_option_url=”https://www.colturperu.com/documents/eng-ExploraPeru-Chachapoyas-Mapa.pdf” link_option_url_new_window=”on” global_colors_info=”{}”]

View full map

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https://colturperu.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Mariana-Watson-COLTUR-Team-Expertise-Destination-Peru-Tourism-Visit-Specialist.jpg” title_text=”Mariana-Watson-COLTUR-Team-Expertise-Destination-Peru-Tourism-Visit-Specialist” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”0.9em” header_6_font=”–et_global_heading_font|600|||||||” header_6_font_size=”1.1em” global_colors_info=”{}”]

MARIANA WATSON

Commercial Director
mariana.watson@colturperu.com[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size_phone=”3.2em” global_colors_info=”{}”]As I head toward the Utcubamba River Valley, I encounter a ribbon of villages, each with its own rhythm and soul. The first is the Leymebamba Museum, which offers an in-depth look at the Chachapoyas people, a culture that flourished in these mountains between 800 AD and 1400 AD. This museum visit is made even more interesting by its director, Dr. Sonia Guillen, whose passion and knowledge enrich the experience. Highlights here include the more than 200 mummies recovered from the remote Lake of Condors, a site accessible only after a demanding 45-kilometer trek.

For me, the second major attraction of this destination is La Petaca, a series of mausoleums as spectacular as they are little-known. After a beautiful horseback ride along a narrow trail, I reach the viewpoint where, with the help of a telescope, I contemplate the sight of more than 100 tombs, built into a wall over 250 meters high. According to legend, it was here during the conquest of the Incas that one of the Chachapoyas people’s leaders poisoned the Inca Huayna Capac, before then committing suicide. At first, the rebel was buried at La Petaca, but subsequently the Incas disinterred and destroyed his remains, thereby inflicting the ultimate punishment for those who believe in life after death. This story was immortalized in a large mural next to the mausoleums, as a warning to those who plotted to rebel against the Inca empire.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”0vw|0vw|0vw|0vw|true|false” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://colturperu.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Amazonas-Chachapoyas-Art-Culture-Experiences-Leymebamba-Museum-Peru.jpg” title_text=”Amazonas-Chachapoyas-Art-Culture-Experiences-Leymebamba-Museum-Peru” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” max_height=”559px” custom_css_free_form=”img{object-fit: cover;}” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://colturperu.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Amazonas-Chachapoyas-Archaeological-Site-Experiences-La-Petaca-Peru.jpg” title_text=”Amazonas-Chachapoyas-Archaeological-Site-Experiences-La-Petaca-Peru” force_fullwidth=”on” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” max_height=”559px” custom_css_free_form=”img{object-fit: cover;}” global_colors_info=”{}”][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”row” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ custom_padding=”|||” global_colors_info=”{}” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size_phone=”3.2em” global_colors_info=”{}”]La Petaca is not the only place where it is possible to see Chachapoyas mausoleums. A similar, much more accessible site, often combined with a visit to the museum, is iconic Revash. The route follows a nearly four-kilometer circuit along a path paved with stone, in excellent condition and almost flat, with several viewpoints along the way that offer a close-up look at these ancient funerary structures embedded in the rock.

The fame of the Chachapoya culture has grown through the rediscovery of lost citadels like Gran Vilaya and Gran Pajatén, hidden in the cloud forest. In addition, down in the valley the remains of more accessible settlements can be seen, such as Ollape, Yalape and, of course, the great citadel of Kuelap, the centerpiece of any tour of the region.

Kuelap is a monumental fortress built on a mountaintop at an altitude of almost 3000 meters. The cable car provides easy access, while I enjoy spectacular views of the valley. The citadel, surrounded by a stone wall up to 20 meters in height, is composed of temples, plazas and circular dwellings, decorated with friezes carved in the form of jaguars, serpents, and geometric motifs. I am accompanied on the tour by the archaeologist and historian Dr. Peter Lerche, an excellent source of knowledge for a better understanding of the history, art, and worldview of this impressive culture. Kuelap is unmissable: it represents not only the architectural majesty of Chachapoyas culture, but also their spiritual sophistication and the leading role they played in the northern region of ancient Peru.

The next day, continuing my journey from south to north through the Utcubamba Valley, I reach the Luya area, where another of the great highlights of this destination is located: the sarcophagi that are an exclusive tradition of the northern valley. I particularly recommend visiting the Karajía sarcophagi, which are the most imposing and best preserved. A hike along a 3.5-kilometer circuit takes us to a viewpoint where we see the enormous rock wall that houses dozens of sarcophagi, enabling us to reconstruct in our minds the complex ceremonial process of burial at such an inaccessible location. The main group, made up of six sarcophagi over two meters high and decorated in red, yellow, white, and purple, is one of the most unique and sophisticated funerary sites in all of Pre-Columbian America. There, I am welcomed by Hans, who tells me how his grandfather built the mill with his own hands, using traditional methods. I learn about artisanal flour production while enjoying the sight of one of the last working watermills in the region, and marveling at the rural wisdom and deep connection with nature it represents. And of course, as on every visit, I enjoy the best cachanga bread I’ve ever eaten, fresh from the wood-fired oven.

During my last few days in Chachapoyas, I decided to shift from archaeological exploration to experience the natural scenery of the region. And so, on my last day, I head to Cocachimba, with its cloud forest, orchids, bromeliads and exceptional biodiversity. Situated at around 1800 meters, this is a paradise for lovers of birdwatching. The hike to Gocta Waterfall, one of the highest in the world at 771 meters, begins in the small town of Cocachimba.
