This edition of Explore Peru<\/em> is dedicated to family travel, with an authentic and committed immersive experience in a tropical Amazon rainforest of transcendent importance for the planet. On this occasion, our CEO, Miguel Velasco, together with his wife and children, ventured upon an exploration of the wonders offered by Tambopata National Reserve, immersing themselves in its magical natural riches. <\/p>\n

In recent weeks, we have witnessed forest fires around the world. The Peruvian Amazon is experiencing a challenging and painful time, confronting us with the reality of climate change. Located in the Madre de Dios region, Tambopata National Reserve is an easily-accessed destination protecting great natural riches, where conservation meets adventure. Recently, my family and I were lucky enough to travel to this paradise. <\/p>\n

The plane lands in Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios, where the rhythm of motorcycle taxis contrasts with the serenity that awaits us in the jungle. Our guide, with the hospitality typical of the Amazon, welcomes us and drives us to the offices of Rainforest Expeditions, where we prepare for our much anticipated journey. From there, we set off for the small community of Filadelfia, where we board the boat that will take us to our destination: Refugio Amazonas. <\/p>\n

Upon arriving at the jetty, we are welcomed with an exotic fruit drink and fresh towels. The eco-lodge, hidden in the depths of the forest\u2014but with a Wi-Fi connection that allows today’s travelers to share unique moments with friends and loved ones\u2014is perfect for families like ours, with children or teenagers, as it combines immersion in nature with modern amenities. The almost hour-long walk immerses us in a forest that envelops us in its ancient embrace. Upon arrival, we ascend the 35 meters that take us to the canopy, from where we can view the great green rooftop through which the Amazon reveals its riches. From above, we contemplate the immensity of a pristine forest where old Brazil nuts, acacia and kapok trees rise up in all their grandeur. Here, thanks to the serenity of our surroundings and our disconnection from the digital world, we are able to rediscover the hidden wisdom in nature. Monkeys, toucans, and flocks of parrots and macaws provide us with an unforgettable spectacle. Following a walk through the rainforest, we arrive at this body of water, which forms a perfect mirror at this early, windless hour. In silence, we paddle the canoe, letting the jungle reveal to us its secrets. Along the way, we spot animals that include agoutis, tapirs and caimans, as well as majestic harpy eagles, and other colorful birds such as manakins and trogons, each of which lends its own magic to this unforgettable experience. <\/p>\n

In the afternoon, we attend an interesting talk about the conservation of nearby protected national reserves, before immersing ourselves in the nocturnal symphony created by frogs and other forest inhabitants.<\/p>\n

Early in the morning, we head into the jungle to explore one of the most eagerly anticipated attractions: the macaw clay lick. When we arrive, we are welcomed by the sight of these beautiful birds, accompanied by herons and fascinating mammals such as capybaras and tapirs. Every sunrise in Tambopata National Reserve is an incredible experience, and the picnic we enjoy on the beach before heading to the Tambopata Research Center (TRC) is a simple but memorable luxury. <\/p>\n

This eco-lodge offers more than 15 activities to choose from that challenge nature lovers and photographers to capture the essence of this wild world. Here, one in ten visitors is lucky enough to spot the elusive jaguar, the king of the Amazon. Since 1989, Rainforest Expeditions has been leading scientific research projects committed to the conservation of this region of Peru. Participating in these activities, by helping to place camera traps or joining in the discovery of new insect species, allows us to actively contribute to the protection of this paradise and leave a positive legacy for the planet. <\/p>\n

Our final excursion takes us to a nearby island, where a nearly three-hour walk offers us moments of contemplation and wonder. Along the way, we see howler and capuchin monkeys, capybaras, mealy parrots, yellow-headed side-neck turtles, and many more species. Each encounter with the local fauna leaves us in awe of the wealth of life that inhabits this Amazonian paradise, reminding us of the vastness of this ecosystem. <\/p>\n

The day ends with a speedboat ride, as the sun sets on a horizon tinged with orange and violet hues.
